Brakes: a variety of braking systems can be used on Trivan trailers; the most popular option is electric brakes. Suitable for most standard applications, electric brakes are relatively inexpensive and can be wired through existing truck plugs and only require the installation of a brake controller in the cab of the truck. Another common option is an air brake system. Air brakes are often used for higher GVW trailers and are recommended if the towing vehicle is already equipped with air brakes. However, air brakes are somewhat more expensive than electric brakes and most state regulations also require air brake systems to be equipped with ABS, which also adds to the price. A third option is a vacuum/hydraulic braking system; however, this system is losing popularity as it requires the towing vehicle to have a vacuum pump installed. This system is also problematic because if the vacuum pump on the vehicle fails, the trailer no longer has any brakes. Most customers tend to stay with air or electric brakes. Please note that state standards regulating brake systems do vary, so please discuss where you intend to operate your unit with a sales representative before you decide on a braking system.
